Galaxy Express 999
Bios

Main Characters

Name: Tetsuro Hoshino
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Age: Around 10 years
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Black
Status: Orphan
The story and myriad characters of Galaxy Express 999 focus on this boy from the slums of Megalopolis City. In the beginning of the story, his mind thinks about three things: Captain Harlock, a man wanted by the public but admired by Tetsuro; Count Mecha, the machine man who hunted and killed his mother for sport; and the Galaxy Express, the means by which he believes all his dreams will come true. It is along the train ride that Tetsuro matures, faster than he had ever wanted to. From the Paradise Law of Titan to Pluto's Graves of Ice, from Count Mecha's Time Castle to his ultimate destination, Andromeda, Tetsuro becomes that much more of a man with each journey he takes. This is what changes Tetsuro's view of life and the universe completely. He has to change his goals, embrace reality, and ultimately let go of his childhood. Only then can Tetsuro truly be a man.

Name: Maetel [Metel]
Race:Humanoid (a "copy" of a human)
Gender: Female
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Brown
Status: Heiress to the Machine Empire
Likes: Tetsuro
Dislikes: Her life
Quote: "The day will come when even your most heartbreaking memories will be important to you."

Name: Harlock XCIX, Phantom F.
Captain Harlock
Race: Human
Gender Male
Age: 30 years
Hair: Brown
Brown: Brown
Status: Captain of the Arcadia
Quote: "With this flag flying...I will go!"Captain Phantom F. Harlock is the good-intentioned man with the bad rap. His name has become as much a tradition of the Harlock family as the scar on his face, a tradition that goes back many generations to the original Phantom F. Harlock, a biplane pilot in the early 20th century.
His story has been as stormy as his present. He had once commanded an earth ship, the Deathshadow, but he was defeated by the invading Ilumidus Empire and forced to surrender. Framed and threatened, his travels would eventually lead him to the Voice of Free Arcadia, where he would find new friends and a new mission. Thus, he became the Captain Harlock of fame.
Harlock is a very serious-looking man, and his scarred face, patched eye, and pirate's outfit can be very deceiving. He truly is a very just man who does what he does for the good of all. His methods are usually quite direct and avoid the loss of life if possible. He also has an eye for someone with a good heart and good intentions like he.

Name: Emeraldas
Race: Unknown (probably Lar Metalian)
Gender: Female
Hair: Orange-red
Eyes: Black
Status: Free Space Trader, captain of the Queen Emeraldas
Likes: Tochiro Oyama
Emeraldas has been compared many times to Captain Harlock, and the two have some similarities. They also know each other from the days of the Voice of Free Arcadia, when she fought side by side with him and Tochirou, the man who is their common bond. After the Ilumidus resistance, Emeraldas became much like Harlock, sailing the sea of stars and delivering justice in her own unique way.

Emeraldas is one of the few people who know the route of Count Mecha's Time Castle, and when her ship, the Queen Emereldas, appears next to the Galaxy Express, Tetsuro doesn't hesitate to get her attention. Emeraldas would've killed Tetsuro if it weren't for two things. First, Maetel (whom she also knows) is with him. Second, Tetsuro has Tochirou's hat and laser. She listens and then tells Tetsuro where the Time Castle will next appear: Trader's Fork, on the planet of Heavy Melder.

Some time after she leaves, she realizes something is happening on Heavy Melder, something that had to do with Tochirou. She arrives too late. Harlock tells her he's already dead. She leaves but later receives a message. It's from Tochirou, whose soul had been successfully integrated into the Arcadia. Learning that it was Tetsuro who had helped him, she realizes that she owes him a favor, and she proceeds to Andromeda, to repay the favor. She and Tetsuro will cross path a few more times.

Emeraldas is a very lonely soul, especially after the death of Tochirou. Her closest companion, like herself, is a wanderer. You see, the reason she and Maetel know each other...is because they're sisters. Emeraldas also has a daughter, Mayu, but she rarely sees her.

Name:Oyama, Tochirou
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Age: Old enough
Hair: Brown
Eyes:Unknown (wears glasses)
Status: Engineer, Designer of the Arcadia
Likes: Emeraldas

Tochiro had been a close friend of Captain Harlock and a man dear to Emeraldas' heart. Among his many ingenious designs were four hand lasers, the most powerful ever made and the only ones known to kill machine men. He gave one to Harlock and one to Emeraldas. A third eventually ended up in the hands of Antares but was lost after his death. The fourth he kept for himself for a time.

Unfortunately, his traveling days were to be cut drastically short. He had caught a lethal disease, so he made one last visit to his mother on Titan. He gave her his hat and his laser. These two would eventually be given to Tetsuro.

He was on Heavy Melder, living the life of a hermit, his time running out and his greatest engineering feat almost complete, when Tetsuro arrived. He told Tetsuro when the Time Castle would appear, and in return, Tetsuro granted him his final request: to be integrated into his work...the Arcadia, the ship he was making for Captain Harlock. Tochirou's soul now resides within the Arcadia, giving the ship the unique distinction of being the only ship with a soul.

Name: Antares
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Hair: Grey
Eyes: Black(?)
Status: Bandit and Caretaker for the orphans of Titan
 Machine men
Qoute: "Don't...trust...Maetel."

Antares was once a planetary pirate himself, and he still carries souvenirs from those raids: a number of unexploded bullets still in his body. Antares is a cautious sort, but he has several reasons to. First, there is the Paradise Law of Titan, which makes virtually anything legal. Second is the children, all the orphans of Titan that are now in his care.

He makes Tetsuro's acquaintance when Tetsuro rescues one of the orphans by shooting and killing the machine man by using Tochiro's laser (given to him by Tochiro's mother). Antares is surprised to see him holding the laser, but since Tetsuro saved the child's life, he shows Tetsuro around. He's still cautious of Tetsuro and Maetel until he uses an X-ray machine (considered crude by 30th century standards) to make sure they're human. Tetsuro's mention of Andromeda makes his blood boil until he hears the reason why.

Antares decides to take action and help Tetsuro, so he goes to Heavy Melder and hides in the Time Castle. When Tetsuro arrives, he reveals himself and provides cover using his own laser. However, Count Mecha outsmarts them, and Antares must make a final move to help Tetsuro. As he says a final warning to Tetsuro, he lets himself explode, shattering Count Mecha's protective shield.

Name: Claire [Clea]
Race: Glass Crystal Machine
Gender: Female
Hair: Clear
Eyes: Clear
Status: Waitress aboard the Galaxy Express
Likes: Tetsuro
Claire has been working aboard the train for a relatively short period, and she explains that her conversion ino a machine body was not really her choice, so she working to earn enough to but her human body back (a rarity when put in perspective). Tetsuro acts courteously (and a bit innocently) towards Claire, and she appreciates it. When she learns of Tetsuro's misson, she begins to worry. She knows that he'll probably get killed. She tries to plead with the conductor to avoid going to Trader's Fork so Tetsuro can be spared, but the conductor couldn't do it without risking his job. This only makes her more worried.

Her worry is a sign of friendship that eventually becomes love, a love that finally moves her to make the ultimate sacrifice to save Tetsuro from Queen Promethea's final attack. She shatters and leaves behind one crystalline tear.
